Unilever Collaborates with Holobiome to Develop Gut-Brain Axis Food Ingredients

The incidence of mental illness has been rising during the coronavirus pandemic, with more than 70% of consumers concerned that stress and anxiety are affecting their health. In response to the changing market and consumer needs, Unilever has announced a partnership with Holobiome to develop food and beverage ingredients with prebiotic potential, that improve mental health by using the gut-brain axis. Holobiome has identified key bacteria that communicate with the brain through neurotransmitters, and adding them to the product mix may improve mental health by increasing the level of certain calming neurotransmitters in the gut.
