National Health Literacy Level Increases in 2021

Recently, the National Health Commission announced that the health literacy level of Chinese residents reached 25.40% in 2021, with an increase of 2.25 percentage points over 2020, and continued to show a steady improvement. More specifically, the national health literacy level of urban residents is 30.70% and rural residents is 22.02%, with an increase of 2.62 and 2.00 percentage points compared to 2020 respectively. Moreover, the literacy level of six types of health issues, in descending order, are: safety and first aid literacy 56.41%, scientific health concept literacy 50.01%, health information literacy 35.93%, infectious disease prevention and control literacy 27.60%, chronic disease prevention and control literacy 26.67%, and basic medical literacy 26.05%.
