Probiotics China News Bites – October 2024

  • On October 18, Shan’en Kang’s proprietary AKK PROBIO strain (scientific name: Akkermansia muciniphila, abbreviated as AKK) successfully passed the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) scientific evaluation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

 

  • On October 15, the environmental assessment report for Nestlé Health Science (China) Co., Ltd.’s lily project for health food research and production is currently under public review. This document reveals for the first time that the company plans to establish localized production lines for protein powder and probiotics in China.

 

  • The National Health Commission Has Issued the “Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Obesity (2024 Edition).”

 

  • Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation and the National Health Commission have established a “technical linkage and expert joint review” mechanism for new raw materials, new functions, and standard formulation in special foods, fully promoting the innovative development of the special foods industry.

 

  • On October 15, American kefir and probiotic brand Lifeway Foods launched a new line of ten innovative flavors. The new series is lactose-free and contains high-quality bioavailable nutrients such as protein, calcium, and 12 active probiotic cultures.

 

  • On October 13, Mead Johnson introduced its Pro Comfort infant formula. According to the official announcement, this new product continues to use the patented dual-protein directed hydrolysis technology of the Pro Comfort series, while also adding LGG active probiotics with over 30 patents and human milk oligosaccharides (HMO).

 

  • On October 16, sports nutrition brand Sabra and FrieslandCampina Ingredients, a provider of protein and prebiotic solutions, partnered with Hengmei, a comprehensive R&D and production service provider, to launch a strategic cooperation for raw materials.

 

  • Novo Nordisk released its 2024 half-year report. According to the official announcement, the company achieved a 7% organic sales growth in the first half of 2024 and raised its full-year financial forecast after a strong 10% growth in the second quarter. The company anticipates a full-year organic sales growth of 7-8%.

 

  • Shenzhen Unknown Biotechnology Co., Ltd. and Yuan Sheng Biotechnology Co., Ltd. formally signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Ningbo, announcing the establishment of a long-term strategic partnership for comprehensive exclusive collaboration in the industrialization of probiotics.

 

  • Yili officially announced the launch of its Changyi 100% oil olive and pomelo-flavored lactic acid drink. According to the official announcement, this product contains oil olive and pomelo, is fat-free, adds real fruit juice, and uses the patented strain K56, offering a refreshing taste.

 

  • The Health & Happiness Group has launched its premium infant nutrition and health brand, Biostime, which features the Biostime Super Gold Probiotic. According to the official announcement, the product includes the specially added “Barrier Protection Bacteria” R0071 to help enhance intestinal protection, as well as the Super Gold R52 probiotics, which contain the protein-degrading bacteria R0052 to support better nutrient absorption.

 

  • Danone’s brand Activia has introduced a kefir series made from authentic kefir grains and a blend of 16 active strains. It also contains calcium to support healthy gut function.

 

  • CLASSYKISS has officially launched its first thick yogurt, the “007 Little Milk Cup.” According to the official announcement, this product contains only fresh whole milk, white sugar, and seven probiotics, with no emulsifiers, no colorings, no thickeners, and 100% fresh milk source, offering a healthy taste.

 

  • Meiyitian has announced the launch of its new probiotic with 60 billion live bacteria, which is patented in China. According to the official announcement, this product is fat-free and contains the K56 strain, which has won six Chinese invention patents. Each 100 mL serving contains 60 billion live bacteria, achieving an upgrade from 50 billion to 60 billion.

 

  • Quaker has announced the launch of its probiotic fermented oatmeal instant oats. According to the official announcement, this product features Quaker’s specially developed probiotic fermented oatmeal powder, which incorporates five major strains of probiotics during the fermentation process. It uses a 360° steaming glutinous technology and includes osmanthus barley brew, providing a fragrant flavor.

 

  • Weidong has officially launched its Post-Meal Light Dairy series. According to the official announcement, this new series includes three flavors: Original, White Peach, and White Strawberry Cherry Blossom. It features the patented strains CECT8145 and J26, along with 65 times concentrated blood orange fruit powder. The formulation is sugar-free, fat-free, and low-calorie, with a 300 mL bottle containing approximately 12.2 calories and being rich in dietary fiber.

 

  • Researchers have identified three strains of lactic acid bacteria from traditional Brazilian cheese that can benefit human health and meet the growing demand in the probiotic industry. These strains, belonging to the Lactobacillus genus, are recognized for their probiotic potential and are used in the food industry, including kombucha, yogurt, kefir, and cheese. These strains are part of the strain library at the Campinas Dairy Technology Center in São Paulo, Brazil, which is affiliated with the country’s Food Technology Research Institute.

 

  • WonderLab has renewed its strategic cooperation agreement with global probiotic ingredient giant IFF in Anji, Zhejiang, jointly embarking on a new chapter in the probiotic market.

 

  • Researchers at Fudan University’s affiliated Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital, including Zhu Xiangjia and Lu Yi, conducted an in-depth analysis of gut microbiota and metabolites in patients with high myopia. They found that the colonization of the probiotic Akkermansia and the levels of the gut metabolite indole-3-acetic acid (3-IAA) are closely related to the degree of myopia development.

 

  • American probiotic brand Seed Health has fully launched its probiotic products at Target nationwide and on its e-commerce site, including the exclusive new product DS-01 14 Day Gut Reset. Additionally, Seed Health is selling DS-01 Daily Synbiotic and PDS-08 Pediatric Daily Synbiotic at Target, which contain a blend of probiotics and prebiotics, priced at approximately $60.

 

  • Health Canada has approved the functional claim for SynbÆctive Femme (Femme), a proprietary probiotic combination containing Lactobacillus plantarum PBS068, Lactobacillus rhamnosus LRH020, and Bifidobacterium lactis BL050, specifically targeting women’s urinary and reproductive health.
