National Health Commission: 270 New Food Approvals Since the 14th Five-Year Plan

On November 14, the National Health Commission (NHC) held a press conference to discuss food safety and nutrition efforts supporting the Healthy China initiative. Since the start of the 14th Five-Year Plan, the NHC has processed 543 applications for “Three New Foods” and approved 270 of them, including 43 approvals this year alone. Notably, these approvals include pioneering new food ingredients such as yeast protein, the first approved microorganism-derived protein, exemplifying the shift toward “harnessing energy and protein from microorganisms.” Additionally, this year, the NHC added four substances—Rehmannia, Ophiopogon, Asparagus Root, and Citrus Reticulata Peel—to the list of dual-use substances for food and medicine, aiming to expand the range of traditional Chinese food resources while ensuring safety.
