All G Secures China Approval to Sell Synthetic Lactoferrin

Sydney-based biotech All G has achieved a world-first in gaining access to the potentially lucrative Chinese market for its synthetic but bioidentical bovine lactoferrin, produced in bioreactors to replicate an immune-bolstering protein that exists in small doses in milk but is abundant in human breast milk.

All G claims the regulatory approval breakthrough cements its position as a global leader in precision fermentation and supports its vision to provide next-generation nutrition for one billion people, with recombinant human lactoferrin next in line.

“This approval is a great moment for All G as we lead the way in precision fermentation technology,” says All G CEO Jan Pacas, who in 2020 founded the company which has raised $45 million to date and is planning to launch its first commercial lactoferring product in 2025.

“Lactoferrin is one of the most valuable and functional proteins in the world. Our technology unlocks its potential, and this is just the beginning – our recombinant human lactoferrin is progressing rapidly, with many other products in the pipeline,” says Pacas, who is also a co-founder of Mad Paws (ASX: MPA) and Flare.

China is one of the largest consumers globally of lactoferrin – also known as “pink gold” for its rarity, value and multifunctional properties – driven by its large infant formula sector, growing demand for functional foods and health-conscious consumers.

Lactoferrin plays a vital role in supporting immune health, enhancing gut function, iron absorption and providing antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory benefits. These attributes make it a highly sought-after ingredient in infant formula, functional foods, dietary supplements, pharmaceuticals and skincare.

Today, lactoferrin is extracted from cow’s milk using industrial-scale separation processes that are resource-intensive and unsustainable, while still yielding limited quantities. These challenges contribute to its high market price, which is currently around US$800 ($154) per kilogram.

Through synthetic biology and precision fermentation, All G can produce bioequivalent, high-purity recombinant bovine lactoferrin that is identical to natural bovine lactoferrin – sustainably and at scale.

Precision fermentation is a process that uses microbes like yeast or bacteria to produce specific proteins or nutrients.

The gene for the target protein is inserted into these microbes, transforming them into high-efficiency protein producers. In a 5-day bioreactor process, the microbes are fed sugar-based feedstock and secrete the desired protein.
