China’s First New Protein Food Technology Innovation Base Established in Beijing Fengtai

Recently, China’s first new protein food technology innovation base was established in Fengtai District, Beijing. The base is located within the Shounong Development Innovation and Technology Industrial Park and is set to commence construction in April 2024, with a total investment of nearly 80 million yuan. It aims to fill the gap in industrial-scale production demonstration of cultivated meat in China.

The base focuses on frontier biomanufacturing technologies, with an emphasis on cell engineering and synthetic biology. It aims to drive transformative, disruptive, and breakthrough technological research and advance industrial applications while fostering an innovation ecosystem.

The facility includes R&D platforms for cultivated meat and microbial protein, along with supporting laboratories. It plans to construct two pilot production lines with individual 2,000-liter cell culture units and three pilot microbial protein production lines with 2,000-liter and 5,000-liter units. Currently, the base has completed a 200-liter cultivated meat production line and a 2,000-liter microbial protein line, achieving leading industry capabilities in flexibility and practicality by integrating fundamental research, cutting-edge technology development, and pilot-scale production.  (Source: China Food Safety Net)
