China’s NHC to Launch Three-Year “Weight Management” Initiative

On March 9, Lei Haichao, Director of the National Health Commission, announced at the Third Session of the 14th National People’s Congress press conference on livelihood issues that China will implement a three-year “Weight Management Year” initiative to promote healthy lifestyles and enhance chronic disease prevention and control.

Lei stated that the leading health risk and disease affecting the Chinese population today are chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), many of which are closely linked to lifestyle, diet, and physical activity. Issues such as abnormal weight can significantly contribute to hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, fatty liver, and even certain types of cancer. He emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in maintaining personal health.
