Researchers Develop Ingestible Probiotic Hydrogel for Antibiotic-Free Helicobacter pylori Eradication

Recently, Zhao Jiulong from the Department of Gastroenterology at Changhai Hospital of the Naval Medical University, Wang Shige from the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, and Xu Lizhi from the University of Hong Kong jointly developed a multifunctional probiotic powder that transforms into a hydrogel in the stomach. This hydrogel is responsive to the gastric inflammation environment and is capable of targeting and eradicating H. pylori, reducing inflammation, promoting gastric mucosal repair, and preserving the gut microbiota.

The research, titled Hydrogel-Transformable Probiotic Powder for Targeted Eradication of Helicobacter pylori with Enhanced Gastric Mucosal Repair and Microbiota Preservation, was published in Advanced Science and selected as the issue’s inside cover. The study integrates materials science, biology, and medicine, and proposes an oral hydrogel-based probiotic therapy for H. pylori that combines antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, tissue repair, and gut microbiome protective functions. The multifunctional probiotic powder developed in this study shows great potential for antibiotic-free antibacterial treatment and precision medicine applications.
