In 2023, the National Health Commission significantly accelerated the process of accepting and reviewing new food ingredients and nutritional fortifiers. Throughout the year, the National Health Commission issued a total of 4 batches, comprising 12 newly approved ingredients. Reflecting on the period from 2018 to 2022, a total of 28 applications for new food ingredients were subjected to public solicitation of opinions, with 23 of them receiving approval. In 2023 alone, the Commission sought public opinions on 17 new food ingredients, resulting in the approval of 12, marking a 140% growth compared to 2022. Before 2021, approvals were predominantly granted for fundamental ingredients such as those derived from animals, plants, and microorganisms for use in food manufacturing. However, post-2021, an increasing number of new component ingredients, including β-1,3/α-1, 3-glucan, and taxifolin, have gradually received approval and entered the food manufacturing process.
