Decreasing Health Supplement Sales in Chinese Pharmacies

On March 27, both HPGC Renmintongtai and TongRenTang released their annual performance reports, revealing data on health products sold in pharmacies. Renmintongtai’s 2022 operating revenue was approximately RMB 9.64 billion yuan (USD $1.4 billion), with a year-on-year increase of 3.5%, but the revenue from health products in the retail business was RMB 34.61 million yuan (USD $5.04 million), with a year-on-year decrease of 66.46%. In 2022, TongRenTang’s operating revenue was RMB 15.37 billion yuan (USD $2.24 billion yuan), with a year-on-year increase of 5.27%, but the proportion of health products and food income in total retail income decreased compared to 2021.

Although the sales of health products in pharmacies are declining, the demand for health consumption is still increasing. According to a recent survey by JD Health, 88.72% of respondents are concerned about “maintaining good health” and 75.86% of respondents consider “strengthening resistance” as their primary purpose for purchasing and using health products. Therefore, “infrastructure-type consumption” is becoming mainstream. (Source: shuzhengkangxun)
