Peripheral Artery Disease: NR and Resveratrol Supplementation in Improving Walking Function

A recent clinical study delved into the effectiveness of nicotinamide riboside (NR) and resveratrol supplementation in improving walking function in individuals with peripheral artery disease (PAD). The condition is characterized by narrowed arteries leading to reduced blood flow, which in turn can affect routine physical activities. The group receiving NR showed a significant improvement in walking distance compared to the placebo group; combining NR with resveratrol provided for no additional benefit vs. NR alone. These findings suggest that NR holds potential in enhancing walking function among PAD patients.

Niagen® NR, used in 30+ clinical peer-reviewed studies, is the same NR featured in Tru Niagen® products. Trust the tru originators of healthy-aging science.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

This is the first study to demonstrate NR had beneficial effects on walking performance in humans and sheds light on the potential therapeutic implications of increasing NAD+ levels through NR supplementation in patients with PAD. The study also suggested that the addition of resveratrol did not further improve upon the effects of NR on walking performance in PAD. These preliminary findings warrant further investigation in a larger, randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE:

To assess the effects of six months of supplementation with NR alone and NR combined with resveratrol on the six-minute walk distance in individuals with PAD.

TAKEAWAYS:

  • NR significantly improved the six-minute walking distance as well as maximal treadmill walking time in individuals with PAD, while the addition of resveratrol did not provide additional benefits.
  • NR significantly improved the six-minute walking distance (by 17.6 meters) compared to placebo at the six-month follow-up, which was consistent with a clinically meaningful change in the six-minute walk.
  • NR + resveratrol did not significantly improve the six-minute walk distance compared to placebo at the six-month follow-up. However, both NR alone and NR combined with resveratrol each significantly improved the six-minute walking distance at the three-month follow-up.
  • NR significantly improved maximal treadmill walking time at the six-month follow-up.
