Probiotics China News Bites – April 2024

  • Ginkgo Bioworks and Aqua Cultured Foods collaborated to optimize an innovative fermentation technology to enhance the quality of “fish-free” seafood, replicating the sensory and flavor precision of freshly caught seafood. Ginkgo Bioworks will analyse microbial characterization and adjust Aqua’s proprietary strains and process to achieve various texture features and high fiber sources to scale production.
  • At the FIC2024 Expo, Juneyao Runying not only launched new oral probiotic products, but also held the “Juneyao Runying Probiotics and Fermentation Market Hotspot Analysis Meeting”. Dr. Hao Zhanxi from Junyao Runying Research Institute gave a keynote speech on “Oral probiotics continue to be hot, new product innovation adds ‘benefit'”.
  • On April 15, Lele Tea announced the launch of original plant-based fermented coconut yogurt series, with avocado coconut yogurt, apple peach coconut yogurt, and golden passion fruit coconut yogurt. The new product is made from coconut juice and contains over a million probiotics per 100g. At the same time, a new dessert “coconut fragrant rice bread” also launched.
  • On April 18, Abbott published the first quarter financial report for the fiscal year 2024. The report shows that the revenue achieved was 99.64 billion dollars, a year-on-year growth of 2.23%. Among them, Abbott’s global nutrition business sales increased by 5.1%, organic growth of 7.7%.
  • On May 15, Shuzheng will hold the 2024 China Nutrition and Health Product (Spring) Market Summit. The theme of the summit will be “Revealing the Power of Nutritional Anti-aging Ingredients”.
  • The e-commerce data analysis firm, Refinery Furnace, published in its brand index chart that in March this year, the sales volume of health foods and dietary nutritional supplements on the Taobao platform increased by 54.65% month-on-month and increased by 16.21% year-on-year.
  • On April 19, Junyao Health released the annual performance report for 2023. The company achieved operating income of 1.634 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 65.71%, and the net profit attributable to the parent company was 57.58 million yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 24.97%.
  • NutriLeads BV announced the expansion of the BeniCaros prebiotic fiber product portfolio which will include different concentrations of active ingredients including rhamnogalacturonan-I(RG-I).
  • On April 17, Lifespace announced the new Shuyou Yang monkey head mushroom probiotics. It is reported that the new product adds L. rossiae PylopassTM, monkey head mushroom powder, alginate and other ingredients.
  • On April 15, Lele Tea launched its original series of plant-based fermented coconut yogurt, which includes Avocado Coconut Yogurt, Apple Peach Coconut Yogurt, and Golden Passion Fruit Coconut Yogurt. The new product, which is made with coconut juice as the base material and fermented with thermophilic streptococcus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. Bulgaricus, boasts a probiotic content of over 1 million per 100g of yogurt.
  • Recently, PIPA, an AI company specializing in nutrition and ingredient, formed a partnership with the biotechnology company Sonomaceuticals. The partnership aims to promote the commercialization of Sonomaceuticals’ proprietary ingredient, WellVine Chardonnay Marc. WellVine is a whole food prebiotic rich in polyphenols and dietary fiber, obtained by the upgrading of by-products (Chardonnay grapes) from the wine-making process. This alliance is intended to accelerate the identification of the functional characteristics of the ingredient and seize commercial opportunities according to AI-recommended synergistic combinations.
  • Recently, Chubu Corporation has launched a product enriched with acetic acid bacteria GK-1 (G.hansenii GK-1) and GABA. GABA has been a top ingredient in Japanese functional food formulations, with multiple GABA-contained products hitting the market each month. Research has found that acetic acid bacteria GK-1 can act on pDCs (plasmacytoid dendritic cells), showing potential application in immune health. GABA is mainly applied in scenarios of stress and fatigue.
  • Japan’s Morinaga Milk Industry announced that three of its probiotic strains, Bifidobacterium BB536, Bifidobacterium M-16V, and Bifidobacterium longum ssp. infantis M-63 have been approved by Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). With this approval, these strains can now be used as dietary supplement ingredients, and regularly used in yogurts and other foods. Furthermore, when used in ordinary foods in Brazil, these three probiotic strains can be associated with health claims related to digestive health in children aged 4 to 18 years. Brazil represents a relatively niche but promising market within Latin America. According to data from Euromonitor International, from 2013 to 2022, Brazil’s probiotic supplement market has a compound annual growth rate of about 9%, with a market size of approximately 200 million US dollars.
  • Recently, the functional beverage brand FHIRST has added a new Lemon Citrus flavor to its series of soda drinks aimed at gut, immune, and brain health. Each can of FHIRST’s soda series contains 20 billion active probiotic cultures, 5 grams of prebiotic plant fiber (inulin and oligosaccharides), and other ingredients such as zinc, with no added sugar or sweeteners. According to the brand, over 90% of the active bacteria in this product are stable and alive, effectively reaching the gut.
  • Recently, Jie Jie Le announced the launch of a new product for spring: “Sakura Berry Flavored Lactobacillus.” The new product includes added strawberry juice, imported New Zealand milk, and three strains of bacteria: Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. Bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus, and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. Lactis. The product is also imbued with the aroma of sakura.

  • On April 2, the Chinese Nutrition Society’s Precision Nutrition Industry Branch held its inaugural meeting in Beijing, followed by a seminar on the theme of “Exclusive Nutrition and Precision Building”. It is reported that the Precision Nutrition Industry Branch is a secondary academic organization under the leadership of the Chinese Nutrition Society.   • On March 25, Wei Quan added new 0 sucrose prune active lactic acid bacteria. According to reports, the new product uses fresh plum concentrate juice and hundreds of billions of probiotics to make it, which has reduced 66% of calories compared to Wei Quan’s original flavor active lactic acid bacteria. It can be eaten after meals, mainly for greasy comfort.
  • On March 21, at the 27th China International Food Additives and Ingredients Exhibition, Novonesis, a biotechnology company, and GNC, a dietary nutrition supplement brand, announced a deep strategic cooperation. The two parties will deeply explore more health benefits and application scenarios of probiotics. At the same time, they will launch a new probiotic product based on the Novonesis Pylopass™ strain in April.
  • Recently, the functional soda brand Culture Pop Soda from the United States has raised 21 million USD in Series B financing. This funding was led by Enlighten Hospitality. Established in 2020, Culture Pop Soda produces soda with active probiotic ingredients, mixed with fruit juice and spices, focusing primarily on gut health.
  • On April 3, Weigang launched a limited edition red bean and Qingtuan flavored yogurt for spring. According to the brand, the new product includes three kinds of active probiotics, contains over 8% red bean and Qingtuan jam, and is made with fresh milk from its select pasture. Packed in 180-gram packaging, it is convenient to carry on the go.
