Ergothioneine Accepted as a New Food Ingredient

On May 17, the National Health Commission released a notice for the acceptance of new food ingredients, including “Longevity Vitamin” – ergothioneine. The release of this notice indicates that ergothioneine, as a cosmetic and food homologous ingredient, may usher in new developmental possibilities in the field of oral anti-aging. In 2014, ergothioneine was officially included in the “Catalogue of Used Cosmetic Ingredients” by the National Medical Products Administration, and with its excellent antioxidant properties, ergothioneine gradually became a major ingredient in the skincare industry. Currently, ergothioneine is applying to be a new food material, indicating its cross-industry application expansion in the domestic food and functional food sectors.
